Biological Background: PAPSS1 Function and Localization

• PAPSS1 is a bifunctional enzyme that mediates two sequential steps in the sulfate activation pathway: first, ATP sulfurylase activity generates adenosine 5′-phosphosulfate (APS) from ATP and sulfate; second, APS kinase activity phosphorylates APS to produce 3′-phosphoadenylylsulfate (PAPS), the universal sulfate donor.

• PAPSS1 is required for the biosynthesis of sulfated L-selectin ligands in endothelial cells, which are critical for lymphocyte homing. Related references: PMID:9576487
