Biological Background: Osteocalcin Function and Localization
- Osteocalcin, encoded by the BGLAP gene, is also known as Bone Gla protein (BGP) or Gamma-carboxyglutamic acid-containing protein. It is a small secreted protein with a molecular weight of approximately 11 kDa.
- The carboxylated form of osteocalcin is a major organic component of the bone matrix, constituting 1-2% of total bone protein. It binds strongly to apatite and calcium, which is essential for bone metabolism and mineralization. Related references: PMID:3019668, PMID:6967872, PMID:39880952
- Acts as a negative regulator of bone formation, limiting bone formation without impairing bone resorption or mineralization.
