Biological Background: OMA1 Function and Localization

  • OMA1 is a mitochondrial inner membrane zinc metalloprotease that is activated by various mitochondrial stresses to cleave OPA1, UQCC3, and DELE1. Related references: PMID:20038677, PMID:25605331, PMID:32132706
  • Cleavage of OPA1 at the S1 site generates soluble OPA1 (S-OPA1), which cooperates with the long form to mediate mitochondrial inner membrane fusion.   • In apoptosis, OMA1 mediates OPA1 cleavage upon BAK/BAX aggregation, leading to cristae remodeling and cytochrome c release. Related references: PMID:25275009
