Biological Background: NSUN3 Function and Localization
- NSUN3 is a member of the NOL1/NOP2/Sun domain family of RNA methyltransferases and is also referred to as NOL1/NOP2/Sun domain family member 3.
- NSUN3 catalyzes the methylation of cytosine-34 in mitochondrial tRNA-Met to 5-methylcytosine (m5C), which is subsequently oxidized to 5-formylcytosine (f5c), enabling the anticodon to decode both AUG and AUA codons, thus expanding the codon recognition capacity of mitochondrial translation.
