Biological Background: NFKBIZ Function and Localization
- NFKBIZ, also known as I-kappa-B-zeta (IkB-zeta), INAP, or MAIL, is a nuclear protein that regulates NF-kappa-B transcription factor complexes. Related references: PMID:16513645, PMID:16622025
- It inhibits NF-kappa-B activity by blocking DNA-binding of p65-p50 heterodimers and p50-p50 homodimers without affecting nuclear translocation. Related references: PMID:16513645
- Under certain conditions, NFKBIZ can also activate transcription; it associates with NFKB1/p50 and RELA to promote expression of genes such as LCN2 and DEFB4. Related references: PMID:16622025
- It is involved in the induction of inflammatory genes via TLR/IL-1 receptor signaling and plays a role in Th17 cell differentiation.
