Biological Background: NFAT2 Function and Localization

• NFAT2 plays a key role in the inducible expression of cytokine genes in T-cells, especially IL-2 and IL-4, and controls gene expression in embryonic cardiac cells; it regulates T-cell activation, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Related references: PMID:10358178
• The protein is essential for osteoclastogenesis and regulates many genes important for osteoclast differentiation and function.
• Subcellular localization involves shuttling between the cytoplasm and nucleus in response to calcium signaling.
