• NEIL1 (Endonuclease 8-like 1), also known as DNA glycosylase/AP lyase Neil1, Nei homolog 1 (NEH1), and Nei-like protein 1, is a multifunctional DNA repair enzyme.
• It plays a critical role in base excision repair of DNA damaged by oxidation or mutagenic agents, acting as a DNA glycosylase that recognizes and removes damaged bases with a preference for oxidized pyrimidines (e.g., thymine glycol, formamidopyrimidine, 5-hydroxyuracil) and marginal activity toward 8-oxoguanine.
