- Protein NDRG4, also known as brain development-related molecule 1 (BDM1) and vascular smooth muscle cell-associated protein 8 (SMAP-8), is a member of the N-myc downstream-regulated gene family.
- Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms; isoform 1 and 2 are brain-specific, while isoform 3 is expressed in both heart and brain.
- Contributes to the maintenance of intracerebral BDNF levels within the normal range, which is necessary for spatial learning and resistance to ischemic neuronal cell death (By similarity).
- May enhance growth factor-induced ERK1/ERK2 phosphorylation, including that triggered by PDGF and FGF, and may attenuate NGF-promoted ELK1 phosphorylation in a microtubule-dependent manner.
- Localizes predominantly to the cytoplasm and cytosol.
- Expressed predominantly in brain and heart; in the brain, detected in astrocytes; upregulated in glioblastoma multiforme cells.
- Classified as a phosphoprotein with alternative splicing, identified in proteomic analyses.
