Biological Background: NANS Function and Localization

• NANS (N-acetylneuraminate-9-phosphate synthase), also known as sialic acid synthase, is a key enzyme in sialic acid biosynthesis encoded by the NANS gene.
• Catalyzes the condensation of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) and N-acetylmannosamine 6-phosphate (ManNAc-6-P) to produce N-acetylneuraminate-9-phosphate (Neu5Ac-9-P), the phosphorylated precursor of the sialic acid N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac). Related references: PMID:10749855
