Biological Background: MSRB2 Function and Localization

• Encoded by the MSRB2 gene, also known as CBS1 or PILB, the methionine-R-sulfoxide reductase B2 (MSRB2) protein is a mitochondrial member of the methionine sulfoxide reductase family.
• Functions as a stereospecific oxidoreductase that catalyzes the reduction of methionine (R)-sulfoxide back to methionine, repairing oxidatively damaged proteins and maintaining protein function.
• Localizes predominantly to the mitochondria, consistent with its role in protecting mitochondrial proteins from oxidative damage.
• Upon oxidative stress, MSRB2 helps preserve mitochondrial integrity by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby promoting cell survival and protein maintenance.
