- MRPL43 encodes the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit protein mL43 (also known as 39S ribosomal protein L43, mitochondrial, L43mt, MRP-L43, or bMRP36a).
- As a component of the 39S mitochondrial ribosome, mL43 participates in the translation of the 13 mitochondrially-encoded mRNAs that are essential for oxidative phosphorylation.
- The protein is synthesized as a precursor with an N-terminal mitochondrial transit peptide, which is cleaved upon import into the mitochondrial matrix.
- Subcellular localization is exclusively mitochondrial, consistent with its role in mitochondrial protein synthesis.
- Tissue expression analysis reveals highest levels in skeletal muscle and testis, with lower expression in heart, brain, placenta, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen, thymus, prostate, ovary, small intestine, colon and leukocytes. MRPL43 expression is co-regulated with TWNK (Twinkle), a mitochondrial DNA helicase.
