  • It is encoded by the nuclear gene MRPL27 (GeneID: 51264) and imported into mitochondria, where it assembles into the mitoribosome.
  • The protein belongs to the bL27m ribosomal protein family, sharing structural homology with bacterial ribosomal protein L27.
  • MRPL27 localizes specifically to the mitochondrion, as indicated by its mitochondrial transit peptide and subcellular fractionation data.
  • Post-translational removal of the transit peptide yields the mature 16 kDa protein.
