Biological Background: MRP1/ABCC1 Function and Localization

• MRP1/ABCC1, encoded by the ABCC1 gene, is an ATP-binding cassette sub-family C member 1 that functions as a multidrug resistance-associated protein. It is also known as leukotriene C4 transporter and GS-X pump.
• The protein functions as an ATP-dependent efflux pump, exporting a broad spectrum of organic anions, glutathione conjugates, and xenobiotics such as leukotriene C4, estradiol-17-beta-o-glucuronide, and methotrexate, and hydrolyzes ATP with low efficiency.
