• Matrilysin, also known as matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7), Pump-1 protease, or uterine metalloproteinase, is a secreted zinc-dependent endopeptidase encoded by the MMP7 gene (MPSL1, PUMP1) in humans.
• It plays a key role in extracellular matrix remodeling by degrading casein, gelatins of types I, III, IV, and V, and fibronectin.
• MMP7 can activate procollagenase, thereby contributing to the proteolytic cascade that regulates tissue homeostasis, wound healing, and pathological processes such as cancer invasion and metastasis.
