Biological Background: MIEF1 Function and Localization

• Mitochondrial dynamics protein MIEF1 (also known as MID51, SMCR7L) is a 51 kDa protein encoded by the MIEF1 gene.
• MIEF1 is an outer mitochondrial membrane protein that recruits the fission mediator DNM1L (DRP1) to mitochondria and regulates its assembly into oligomeric spirals to promote mitochondrial fission.
