Biological Background: MFSD2A Function and Localization

  • MFSD2A is a sodium-dependent lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) symporter essential for blood-brain barrier (BBB) formation and function. Related references: PMID:24828040 PMID:32572202 PMID:34135507
  • It transports LPC into the brain, which constitutes the major pathway for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) delivery critical for normal brain growth and cognitive function. Related references: PMID:26005868 PMID:34135507
  • The protein belongs to the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) and is specifically expressed in endothelial cells of the BBB.
  • Subcellularly, MFSD2A localizes to the cell membrane and endoplasmic reticulum membrane.
