- MERTK is a receptor tyrosine kinase that transduces signals from the extracellular matrix by binding ligands like LGALS3, TUB, TULP1, and GAS6, regulating cell survival, migration, differentiation, and phagocytosis of apoptotic cells (efferocytosis).
- Ligand binding induces autophosphorylation, creating docking sites for downstream signaling molecules such as GRB2 or PLCG2, leading to phosphorylation of MAPK1, MAPK2, FAK/PTK2, or RAC1.

- In the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), MERTK functions as a regulator of rod outer segment fragments phagocytosis, essential for photoreceptor maintenance.

- The protein is localized to the cell membrane.
