Biological Background: MDH1 Function and Localization
- MDH1 is a cytoplasmic enzyme that catalyzes the reversible reduction of aromatic alpha-keto acids using NADH as a cofactor. Related references: PMID:2449162, PMID:3052244
- It plays essential roles in the malate-aspartate shuttle, transferring reducing equivalents across the mitochondrial membrane, and in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, supporting mitochondrial NADH supply for oxidative phosphorylation. Related references: PMID:31538237
