- Monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1), encoded by the SLC16A1 gene, is a member of the solute carrier family 16 and is also known as MCT, HHF7, or MCT1D.
- Functions as a bidirectional proton-coupled transporter that catalyzes the rapid plasma membrane transport of monocarboxylates such as lactate, pyruvate, acetate, and ketone bodies (acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate), thereby contributing to intracellular pH maintenance. - Serves as a major lactate exporter and is implicated in cellular responses to a high-fat diet by modulating lactate and pyruvate levels, which influences central metabolic pathways, insulin secretion, and blood glucose homeostasis.
