MBTPS1 encodes a membrane-bound serine protease that cleaves substrates after hydrophobic or small residues with Arg/Lys at P4. Key substrates include SREBF1/2, ATF6, BDNF, GNPTAB, and FAM20C, and it catalyzes the first step in activating SREBPs and ATF6, linking it to cholesterol/lipid metabolism and the unfolded protein response.
