- LHX3 (LIM/homeobox protein Lhx3) is a transcription factor containing two LIM domains and a homeobox DNA-binding domain, enabling sequence-specific DNA binding and transcriptional regulation.
- It recognizes and binds to the consensus motif 5'-AATTAATTA-3' in regulatory elements of target genes such as CGA and CHX10, positively modulating transcription, with co-activation by LDB2.
- It synergistically enhances transcription from the prolactin promoter in cooperation with POU1F1/Pit-1.
- LHX3 is required for the establishment of specialized cells of the pituitary gland and the nervous system, with a role in pituitary and neuronal development. Related references: PMID:21149718
- Involved in the development of interneurons and motor neurons in cooperation with LDB1 and ISL1.
