Biological Background: KPNA1 Function and Localization

• KPNA1, also known as Importin subunit alpha-5, Karyopherin subunit alpha-1, NPI-1, RCH2, and SRP1-beta, is a member of the importin alpha family that functions as an adapter for nuclear protein import.
• Functions as an adapter for nuclear protein import by specifically binding to substrates containing simple or bipartite NLS motifs, and docking to the nuclear pore complex via interaction with KPNB1, followed by Ran-dependent translocation.
