• KLK1 encodes kallikrein-1, also known as tissue kallikrein, a secreted serine protease of the glandular kallikrein family.
• The primary function of KLK1 is the cleavage of kininogen to release Lys-bradykinin, a potent vasoactive peptide involved in blood pressure regulation and inflammation.
• In the context of microbial infection, KLK1 cleaves the Neisseria meningitidis NHBA protein in saliva, suggesting a role in innate immune defense at mucosal surfaces.
