Biological Background: KLF11 Function and Localization

• Krueppel-like factor 11 (KLF11), also known as TIEG-2, is a member of the Sp/KLF family of transcription factors.
• KLF11 functions as both a transcriptional activator and repressor. It activates epsilon- and gamma-globin gene promoters and represses promoters containing SP1-like binding sites, inhibiting cell growth. Related references: PMID:10207080 PMID:9748269 PMID:16131492
• It represses transcription of SMAD7, enhancing TGF-beta signaling (By similarity).
• KLF11 induces apoptosis (By similarity).
• The protein localizes to the nucleus and is ubiquitously expressed, with higher levels in erythroid cells.

• Mutations in KLF11 are associated with maturity-onset diabetes of the young type 7 (MODY7).
