- KIF5B encodes the heavy chain of kinesin-1, a plus-end-directed microtubule motor protein essential for intracellular transport.
- The protein, also known as conventional kinesin heavy chain or ubiquitous kinesin heavy chain (UKHC), mediates the movement of organelles such as mitochondria and lysosomes along microtubules.
- KIF5B regulates centrosome and nuclear positioning during mitotic entry. In the G2 phase, it drives the separation of nuclei and centrosomes by antagonizing dynein function in a BICD2-dependent manner. Related references: PMID:20386726
- In neurons, KIF5B is required for anterograde axonal transport of MAPK8IP3/JIP3, which is crucial for axon elongation.
- Through interactions with PLEKHM2 and ARL8B, KIF5B directs lysosome movement toward microtubule plus ends.
