- KIF13A (kinesin-like protein KIF13A, also known as RBKIN) is a plus-end directed microtubule-dependent motor protein that converts chemical energy from ATP hydrolysis into mechanical force for intracellular transport.
- It plays key roles in mannose-6-phosphate receptor (M6PR) transport to the plasma membrane, endosomal sorting during melanosome biogenesis, and the abscission step of cytokinesis.
- KIF13A mediates transport of M6PR-containing vesicles from the trans-Golgi network to the plasma membrane via direct interaction with the AP-1 complex.
- During melanosome maturation, it delivers melanogenic enzymes from recycling endosomes to nascent melanosomes by creating peripheral recycling endosomal subdomains in melanocytes.
- In cytokinesis, KIF13A translocates ZFYVE26 (and possibly TTC19) to the midbody, which is essential for abscission.
