Biological Background: KAT8/MYST1/MOF Function and Localization
- Histone acetyltransferase KAT8 (also designated MYST1, hMOF) is a member of the MYST family of acetyltransferases, characterized by a conserved MYST domain and a C2HC zinc-finger motif.
- KAT8 catalyzes histone H4 acetylation at 'Lys-5', 'Lys-8', or 'Lys-16' depending on the associated complex: as part of the MSL complex, it generates H4K16ac to prevent chromatin compaction, while the NSL complex directs H4K5ac and H4K8ac to transcription start sites to promote initiation.
