Biological Background: IMPDH2 Function and Localization
- IMPDH2 (inosine-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase 2) is also known as IMPD2 or IMPDH-II, a member of the IMPDH family.
- Catalyzes the conversion of inosine 5'-phosphate (IMP) to xanthosine 5'-phosphate (XMP), the first committed and rate-limiting step in de novo guanine nucleotide synthesis, crucial for cell growth regulation. Related references: PMID:7763314, PMID:7903306
- Possesses single-stranded nucleic acid-binding activity and may play a role in RNA and/or DNA metabolism. Related references: PMID:14766016
- May contribute to malignancy development and tumor growth progression.
- Localizes to the cytoplasm, nucleus, and cytosol.
- IMPDH2 is the predominant isoform in tumors, while IMPDH1 predominates in normal leukocytes.
