Biological Background: IGFBP1 Function and Localization
- Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 (IGFBP1), also designated placental protein 12 (PP12), is a secreted multifunctional protein encoded by the IGFBP1 gene.
- It regulates the bioavailability of IGFs (IGF1 and IGF2) by binding them, thereby modulating IGF-mediated cellular processes including migration, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis in a cell-type specific manner.
