Biological Background: DNA-binding protein inhibitor ID-1 Function and Localization
- DNA-binding protein inhibitor ID-1 (ID1), also known as inhibitor of DNA binding 1 or inhibitor of differentiation 1, is a member of the ID family of helix-loop-helix (HLH) proteins that lack a basic DNA-binding domain. Alternative names include Class B basic helix-loop-helix protein 24 (bHLHb24).
- ID1 functions as a transcriptional regulator by negatively regulating basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors. It forms heterodimers with bHLH proteins, inhibiting their DNA binding and transcriptional activity.
- ID1 is implicated in a variety of cellular processes, including cellular growth, senescence, differentiation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and neoplastic transformation. It inhibits skeletal muscle and cardiac myocyte differentiation.
- ID1 regulates the circadian clock by repressing the transcriptional activator activity of the CLOCK-BMAL1 heterodimer (by similarity).
- Subcellular localization: ID1 is found in both the cytoplasm and nucleus, consistent with its role in nucleocytoplasmic shuttling and transcriptional regulation.
