Biological Background: ICAM-1/CD54 Function and Localization
- ICAM-1 is a cell adhesion molecule that serves as a receptor ligand for ITGAL:ITGB2/LFA-1 and ITGAM:ITGB2/MAC-1, mediating leukocyte cell-cell adhesion and calibrating T-cell killing strength, as well as adhesion between stimulated neutrophils and endothelial cells. - During leukocyte trans-endothelial migration, ICAM1 engagement promotes the assembly of endothelial apical cups through ARHGEF26/SGEF and RHOG activation. Related references: PMID:17875742
- ICAM-1 promotes cell aggregation in epithelial cells via interaction with MUC1. Related references: PMID:11173916
- Acts as a receptor for major group rhinoviruses and Coxsackievirus A21, and is targeted for degradation by Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus to evade immune clearance.
