Biological Background: L-selectin Function and Localization

- It plays a critical role in lymphocyte homing by supporting the adherence of lymphocytes to high endothelial venules (HEV) of peripheral lymph nodes. Related references: PMID:12403782, PMID:28011641
- L-selectin promotes the initial tethering and rolling of leukocytes along the vascular endothelium, a key step in the leukocyte adhesion cascade. Related references: PMID:12403782, PMID:28011641
- The protein is a member of the selectin family of adhesion molecules (including E- and P-selectin) and contains an N-terminal C-type lectin domain, an EGF-like domain, multiple sushi (CCP) domains, a transmembrane helix, and a short cytoplasmic tail.
- L-selectin is localized on the cell membrane and is constitutively expressed on most leukocytes, including B-cell lines and T-lymphocytes.
