Biological Background: HSD11B2 Function and Localization
- HSD11B2 is a microsomal enzyme belonging to the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase family, catalyzing the NAD-dependent oxidation of active 11beta-hydroxyglucocorticoids (e.g., cortisol) to inactive 11-ketoglucocorticoids (e.g., cortisone). - By inactivating glucocorticoids, HSD11B2 protects the nonselective mineralocorticoid receptor from inappropriate glucocorticoid occupancy, crucial for electrolyte balance and blood pressure regulation. Related references: PMID:10497248 PMID:12788846 PMID:17314322
- It also oxidizes 11beta-hydroxytestosterone to 11-ketotestosterone, a potent androgen, and converts 11beta-hydroxyandrostenedione to 11-ketoandrostenedione, contributing to androgen metabolism. Related references: PMID:22796344 PMID:27927697 PMID:23685396
