- Hsc70-interacting protein (HIP), also known as ST13, aging-associated protein 2, or progesterone receptor-associated p48 protein, is a 41 kDa cytoplasmic co-chaperone encoded by the ST13 gene.
- It functions as a co-chaperone for the heat shock cognate 71 kDa protein (HSC70), binding to the ATPase domains of at least two HSC70 molecules upon activation by HSP40.
- HIP stabilizes the ADP-bound state of HSC70, which has high affinity for substrate proteins, thereby facilitating the chaperone cycle and protein folding.
- Through its intrinsic chaperone activity, HIP may directly contribute to the interaction of HSC70 with various target proteins, assisting in protein quality control and stress responses.
