Biological Background: HMGB2 Function and Localization
- HMGB2 (High Mobility Group Protein B2), also known as HMG-2, is a multifunctional non-histone chromosomal protein.
- In the nucleus, HMGB2 binds DNA with a preference for non-canonical structures like single-stranded DNA, bending DNA and enhancing flexibility to facilitate transcription, chromatin remodeling, and V(D)J recombination. Related references: PMID:11909973, PMID:18413230, PMID:19522541
- It acts as a cofactor for the RAG complex in V(D)J recombination, stimulating cleavage and RAG protein binding at recombination signal sequences.
