Biological Background: GSTA1 Function and Localization
- Glutathione S-transferase A1 (GSTA1), also known as GST2, GTH1, GSTA1-1, and GST-epsilon, is a member of the alpha class of glutathione S-transferases.
- GSTA1 catalyzes the conjugation of reduced glutathione to electrophilic centers on a wide range of exogenous and endogenous hydrophobic substrates, playing a key role in detoxification and cellular defense mechanisms.
- Specifically, it is involved in the formation of glutathione conjugates of prostaglandin A2 (PGA2) and prostaglandin J2 (PGJ2), contributing to the modulation of lipid signaling molecules. Related references: PMID:9084911
- GSTA1 also catalyzes the isomerization of D5-androstene-3,17-dione (AD) into D4-androstene-3,17-dione, suggesting a role in hormone biosynthesis. Related references: PMID:11152686
