Biological Background: GRIK2 Function and Localization
- GRIK2, also known as Glutamate receptor ionotropic, kainate 2 (GluK2, GluR6, EAA4), is a member of the kainate family of ionotropic glutamate receptors, encoded by the GRIK2 gene in human.
- It functions as a cation-permeable ligand-gated ion channel, activated by the neurotransmitter L-glutamate and the agonist kainic acid, mediating fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. Related references: PMID:7536611 PMID:8730589 PMID:14511640

- In association with GRIK3, GRIK2 is involved in presynaptic facilitation of glutamate release at hippocampal mossy fiber synapses.
