Biological Background: GNRH2 Function and Localization
- GNRH2 encodes progonadoliberin-2, a precursor protein that is processed to produce gonadotropin-releasing hormone II (GnRH II). The gene undergoes alternative splicing, generating multiple isoforms.
- The mature hormone stimulates the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the anterior pituitary, playing a central role in reproductive function.
- GNRH2 expression is highest in the midbrain, but notably it is also expressed at significantly higher levels outside the brain (up to 30-fold), particularly in kidney, bone marrow, and prostate, suggesting broader regulatory roles.
