Biological Background: GNAT1 Function and Localization
- GNAT1 encodes transducin alpha-1 chain, the alpha subunit of the rod-specific heterotrimeric G protein that couples rhodopsin to cGMP-phosphodiesterase (PDE6) in the phototransduction cascade. Related references: PMID:22190596
- Functions as a GTPase molecular switch: inactive GDP-bound state is activated by light-stimulated rhodopsin, leading to GTP binding and subsequent activation of PDE6, which hydrolyzes cGMP and closes cation channels in rod outer segments.
