Biological Background: Glucose-6-Phosphate Isomerase Function and Localization
- Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI) is also known as autocrine motility factor (AMF), neuroleukin (NLK), phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI), phosphohexose isomerase (PHI), and sperm antigen 36 (SA-36).
- The enzyme catalyzes the conversion of alpha-D-glucose-6-phosphate to beta-D-fructose-6-phosphate, the second step in glycolysis, and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis, within the cytoplasm. Related references: PMID:28803808
- GPI also exhibits C2-epimerase activity, interconverting D-glucose-6-phosphate and D-mannose-6-phosphate, and anomerase activity for multiple hexose-6-phosphates.
- Besides its metabolic role, extracellular GPI functions as a cytokine: as autocrine motility factor (AMF), a secreted angiogenic factor enhancing endothelial cell motility. Related references: PMID:11437381
