Biological Background: GFRA1 Function and Localization

  • GFRA1 (GDNF family receptor alpha-1) is a GPI-anchored coreceptor for the neurotrophic factor GDNF, essential for the development and maintenance of dopaminergic neurons. Related references: PMID:10829012 PMID:31535977
  • Binding of GDNF to GFRA1 leads to autophosphorylation and activation of the RET receptor tyrosine kinase, propagating downstream signaling pathways. Related references: PMID:31535977
  • The protein localizes to the cell membrane, Golgi apparatus, trans-Golgi network, endosomes, and multivesicular bodies, indicative of dynamic trafficking.

  • For IF/ICC, permeabilization is recommended to detect intracellular pools; co-staining with organelle markers can confirm localization.
