Biological Background: GFPT2 Function and Localization

• GFPT2 (Glutamine--fructose-6-phosphate aminotransferase [isomerizing] 2), also known as GFAT2 or GFAT 2, is a member of the glycosyltransferase family that plays a key role in hexosamine metabolism.
• It functions as the rate-limiting enzyme of the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway (HBP), catalyzing the conversion of fructose-6-phosphate and glutamine to glucosamine-6-phosphate. Related references: PMID:35229715
• Through this reaction, GFPT2 controls glucose flux into the HBP and thereby regulates the supply of substrates for N- and O-linked protein glycosylation (By similarity).
