- GCLM (Glutamate--cysteine ligase regulatory subunit) is the modifier subunit of glutamate-cysteine ligase, the rate-limiting enzyme in glutathione biosynthesis.
- Also known as GCS light chain, gamma-ECS regulatory subunit, and gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase regulatory subunit; encoded by the GCLM gene.
- Essential for cellular antioxidant defense; forms the holoenzyme with the catalytic subunit GCLC.
- Ubiquitously expressed across tissues, with highest levels observed in skeletal muscle.
- Subject to acetylation and alternative splicing, as identified by proteomics (UniProt keyword: Acetylation, Alternative splicing).
- Reference proteome protein with a predicted molecular weight of ~31 kDa (observed at 31 kDa).
