Biological Background: GBF1 Function and Localization
- GBF1 (Golgi-specific brefeldin A-resistance guanine nucleotide exchange factor 1) is a 206 kDa protein encoded by the GBF1 gene (Gene ID: 8729). It belongs to the family of guanine-nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) for Arf small GTPases.
- Functions as a GEF for ARF1, ARF4, and ARF5, catalyzing GDP to GTP exchange to activate Arf proteins, which initiates COPI vesicle coating at early secretory compartments. Related references: PMID:12047556, PMID:12808027, PMID:15616190
