Biological Background: GAD67/GAD1 Function and Localization

• GAD1 encodes glutamate decarboxylase 1, also known as GAD67, a 67 kDa isoform of the GABA-synthesizing enzyme (UniProt Q99259).
• Catalyzes the conversion of glutamate to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, using pyridoxal 5'-phosphate as a cofactor.
