Biological Background: Fibronectin Function and Localization

• Fibronectin (FN) is a high-molecular-weight glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix, encoded by the FN1 gene (GeneID: 2335). It exists as a soluble dimeric plasma form (secreted by hepatocytes) and as insoluble cellular fibrils deposited by fibroblasts and epithelial cells.
• Binds to cell surfaces and various compounds including collagen, fibrin, heparin, DNA, and actin, mediating cell adhesion, motility, opsonization, wound healing, and maintenance of cell shape (PubMed:3024962, PubMed:3593230, PubMed:3900070).
