Biological Background: FASTKD1 Function and Localization

• FASTKD1 (FAST kinase domain-containing protein 1, mitochondrial) is a mitochondrial protein encoded by the FASTKD1 gene (KIAA1800) and a member of the FAST kinase domain-containing protein family.
• It functions in the down-regulation of mitochondrial MT-ND3 mRNA levels, leading to decreased respiratory complex I abundance and activity.
• Subcellular localization: Mitochondrion.
• Highest expression in heart; also detected in spleen, thymus, testis, ovary, colon, smooth muscle, kidney, brain, lung, liver, and white adipose tissue.
• Post-translational modifications include acetylation; the protein undergoes alternative splicing and contains a transit peptide for mitochondrial import.
