FAIM3 (also known as TOSO, FcmuR) encodes the immunoglobulin mu Fc receptor, a high-affinity receptor for both secreted and membrane-bound IgM. This receptor primarily regulates IgM transport, homeostasis, and effector functions in B cell development and primary immune responses. The protein mediates bidirectional trafficking of IgM: it enables exocytosis of membrane-bound IgM on the plasma membrane and endocytosis of IgM-antigen complexes toward lysosomes for degradation. In mucosal epithelium, FAIM3 facilitates retrotranscytosis of antigen-IgM complexes across M cells to antigen-presenting cells in mucosal lymphoid tissues. At the protein level, it is detected in bone marrow pro-/pre-B cells, follicular and memory B cells, and a small subset of germinal center B cells, as well as lower levels in NK cells. Transcripts are also found in lymph nodes, lung, thymus, and kidneys.
