Biological Background: FADS1 Function and Localization
- FADS1, also known as delta-5 fatty acid desaturase (D5D), is an endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial membrane protein that introduces a cis double bond at carbon 5 of fatty acyl-CoA substrates.
- It catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs), converting dihomo-gamma-linoleoate (DGLA; 20:3n-6) to arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4n-6) and eicosatetraenoate (ETA; 20:4n-3) to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3).
