Biological Background: ETV1 Function and Localization
- ETV1, also known as Ets-related protein 81, is a member of the ETS family of transcription factors.
- Transcriptional activator that binds to DNA sequences containing the consensus pentanucleotide 5'-CGGA[AT]-3' to regulate gene expression. Related references: PMID:7651741
- Required for olfactory dopaminergic neuron differentiation; may directly activate expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH).
- Predominantly localized to the nucleus, consistent with its role in transcription regulation.
- Tissue expression is very high in brain, high in testis, lung, and heart, moderate in spleen, small intestine, pancreas, and colon, and weak or absent in other tissues.
- Subject to phosphorylation and ubiquitination (Ubl conjugation), and characterized as a proto-oncogene involved in chromosomal rearrangements linked to disease variants.
